Most of the people love to construct a stone pathway in their gardens for giving a rustic or country look to it. A stone pathway not only gives a storybook feel to a woodland garden but also defines the area of your garden!
Making a stone pathway is does not require the use of special masonry skills and is not as complex as it seems to be. The best materials for stone walkways consists of large and flat solid rocks, that you ma be able to maneuver. Here are some steps that you may follow to make a stone path in your garden:
1. Firstly, you need to choose the path that your stone walkway is going to take. Don’t have the walkway run under a tree because the tree roots may eventually damage the walkway. Determine whether you want the walkway to be straight or curved. You may consult a specialist for finding what’s right for your garden.
2. How wide do you want your pathway to be? A thumb rule is to make the pathway broad enough, so that two people may be able to stride it side by side. For instance, you may use 3 or 4’ width for the pathway.
3. For straight pathways, you need to stand at one of the projected path and have a partner unravel a ball of string till the end of the projected path. Each of you will then drive a stake in the ground where you're standing, tying your end of the string to the stake.
4. For building curved stone pathways, you need to wind in graceful hoses for marking the two ends of the walkways. The hose will enable you to mark one side of the pathway. Now, you may be able to mark the other side of the pathway y repeating the same process.
5. Now, its’ the time to use a spade. Plunge down the spade to around 5” deep and then switch over to a digging shovel for excavating the soil and sod down to a depth of over 5”.
6. Place your rocks at the projected path. Lay down the majority of your rocks, with the largest ones on the middle of the pathway. Now stroll down your stone walkway using your normal gait. This is just to conform whether you can walk comfortably or not. Make the necessary adjustments accordingly.
7. Now, take a carpenter’s level and check for levelness. If you find that a stone is resting too far down into the sand, then you should remove it and place more sand under it. If you find that a stone is sitting up too high, then do the opposite: scrape away some sand from under it.
Well, above are some steps that you need to follow in order to build an efficient stone pathway for your garden.
